Recently Wayne Kraska drew on his own personal experience, of moving from the large Atlanta metro area to the small town of Rome, Georgia and starting the Rome Redbacks Australian Rules Football Club. In just a handful of years the club had grown to 32 players competing in USAFL games and were victorous in their first ever game at the USAFL National Championships in Sarasota, Florida in 2023.
Central to the article is population size is far less important than the quality of leadership. Kraska identified three non-negotiable traits, Drive, Energy & Passion, for anyone wanting to build a grassroots sports club or even a non profit organization. However, he also stressed the simple importance of time, a supportive home life, and an open and humble mindset is needed for success.
