Could the USA Have Thousands of Aussie Rules Clubs by 2050?
Australia supports over 2,600 registered Aussie Rules clubs across a population of just 25 million. The United States — with more than 330 million people — currently has around 50. That gap tells a story, but more interestingly, it raises a question: what's actually possible over the next 25 years?
Wayne Kraska of the Aussie Footy Growth Collective digs into the numbers and makes a compelling case. Here's what stands out:
- Growth has averaged fewer than two new clubs per year since the mid-1990s — leaving enormous room for acceleration.
- Population size is largely a myth as a barrier. Small towns with the right people have consistently outperformed expectations.
- Rugby union crossed 700 U.S. clubs by the early 2010s — a roadmap Aussie Rules could follow.
- With over 700 U.S. towns of 35,000+ adults, the untapped footprint for new clubs is massive.
- A realistic target of 300–400 clubs by 2050 is well within reach — and the ceiling could be much higher.
It's a thought-provoking read for anyone who loves the game and wonders what its future in America really looks like.
